About The Breed
Character: Toy and Miniature Aussies are intelligent, loyal, and versatile - making exceptional companions. Australian Shepherds are easily trained and eager to please their person. Aussies are naturally aloof/reserved with strangers (unlike a Labrador) and are devoted to their family.
General Appearance: The Australian Shepherd is a well-balanced dog, no matter the size. Aussies are attentive and animated, showing strength and agility. Slightly longer than tall, the coat is moderate length and coarseness with coloring that offers variety and individuality. An identifying characteristic is his natural or docked bobtail.
Size: People often ask what the difference between a Toy and a Mini Aussie is. The difference is based on height at the top of the shoulder (withers). An Aussie is classified as "Toy" if measuring under 14." An Aussie is classified as "Mini" if measuring between 14" and 18." An Aussie taller than 18" is classified as a "Standard." Weight is not a factor in distinguishing between the size variations.
Many of our Adults are dual registered with the American Kennel Club (AKC) as Miniature American Shepherds (MAS). The Miniature American Shepherd Club of the USA (MASCUSA) was selected in May of 2011 as the parent club of the Miniature American Shepherd for the American Kennel Club. The breed was formed by a split of the Australian Shepherd breed in AKC, and the incorporation of dogs previously known as Miniature Australian Shepherds, and also known as Toy Australian Shepherds, and North American Shepherds.
